WHAT MADE ME PLAY LACROSSE
All the cool kids did it in middle school. I was new to the middle school. So I tried out. I made team as a manager – first week, 3 kids busted b/c smoking dope. I was immediately moved to the 7/8 team as a player. And then moved forward in the program.

WHAT IMPACT DID YOU HAVE ON THE SPORT
I’ll leave that to others. I think it was fairly significant in MN though.

3. Impact on the Sport:
Peter Johnson significantly contributed to placing Minnesota lacrosse on the national Division 1 stage, Becoming one of the first Minnesota natives to excel at the highest collegiate levels. His success inspired younger athletes from Minnesota to pursue Division 1 opportunities, demonstrating that players from emerging lacrosse regions could compete nationally. His coaching tenure with the Minnesota Elite Travel

Team further amplified this impact, assisting many Minnesota athletes to compete at high levels (D1, D3,

MCLA). Additionally, his ongoing volunteer work with Harlem Lacrosse exemplifies his dedication to the sport, directly impacting student-athletes by transforming academic and athletic outcomes. Notably, Peter mentored a Harlem Lacrosse student who progressed from academically ineligible to earning a lacrosse scholarship and graduating from the University at Albany.

4. Motivation to Play, Coach, Referee or Administer Lacrosse:

Initially drawn to lacrosse as a hockey player, Peter found the sport similarly compelling for its unique blend of endurance, physicality, and team competition. His passion deepened due to lacrosse’s profound impact on his life, especially the opportunities it provided for higher education. Playing under legendary coach

Andy Shay at Yale was instrumental in shaping the core values he upholds today. Despite working a full-time job in New York City during his two seasons of professional lacrosse, the experience reinforced many lacrosse-driven values he still embodies today. For example, Peter introduced the principle “DJTAIBAI” –

“Don’t Just Talk About It, Be About It” – at his previous startup, Kustomer, where it became a core value prior to the company’s acquisition by Facebook in 2020. Peter remains dedicated to lacrosse largely because of its ability to transform lives, as exemplified by his volunteer tutoring with Harlem Lacrosse, helping student-athletes achieve academic success and collegiate opportunities.

5. Total Years Involved in Lacrosse: Active involvement: 2002 – Present (~23 years)

Carson Cannon – player (HS and college player, HS Travel team and HS assist coach)

Carson N. Cannon, D.D.S. is a general dentist in Stillwater, Minnesota, and a former NCAA Division I lacrosse player at the University of Denver – one of the country’s top collegiate programs. As a four year starter at defense, he played a critical role in leading the Denver Pioneers to their historic 2015 NCAA National Championship, the first ever won by a team outside the East Coast. During his time at Denver he served as a team captain his senior year while also receiving academic, all-conference, and all-american honors.

Carson’s experience as a high-level student-athlete taught him the discipline, teamwork, and work ethic that would later define his career in healthcare. After graduating from Denver, he returned to Minnesota to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) from the University of Minnesota. Today, Dr. Cannon practices at Southill Dental in his hometown of Stillwater, where he provides comprehensive dental care to patients of all ages. His services range from routine cleanings and fillings to advanced procedures like implants, root canals, and cosmetic dentistry. Known for his calm, approachable demeanor and focus on long-term patient relationships, Carson is passionate about educating patients and helping them achieve lasting oral health.

Outside the clinic, he remains deeply connected to the lacrosse community. As an advocate for the growth of the game in Minnesota, Carson often speaks about the impact lacrosse had on his life and serves as a role model for young athletes aspiring to play at the collegiate level. His journey—from Minnesota high school lacrosse to NCAA champion, and now a trusted healthcare provider—reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence, leadership, and community.

In addition to his professional work, Carson has remained actively involved in growing the game of lacrosse across Minnesota. Over the past decade, he has served as a coach with the Minnesota Loons, a competitive traveling lacrosse program dedicated to developing high-level players throughout the Midwest. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at White Bear Lake High School, helping guide and mentor student-athletes at the varsity level. In 2022, he returned to his roots as a volunteer coach at Stillwater High School, giving back to the program that launched his own athletic journey. Through coaching, Carson continues to share his knowledge, leadership, and passion for the game, inspiring the next generation of Minnesota lacrosse players.

Dr. Cannon lives in Stillwater with his wife Maureen and their young children. He enjoys time with family, staying active outdoors, and giving back to the community that shaped him.
