“Teammates for Life”

April 12, 2026…This week is hashtagD3Week – and while my athletic experience didn’t technically fall under NCAA Division III, my time at Saint John’s University absolutely embodied everything Division III represents.

I played lacrosse at Saint John’s in the MCLA so we weren’t NCAA-sponsored. We paid dues. We bought our own equipment. We helped fund travel, jerseys, and operating costs. But we took representing SJU seriously – and the program is one of the most successful in MCLA history, with conference titles, national tournament appearances, and countless All-Conference and All-MCLA honors.

More importantly, it gave me something far bigger than wins.

I almost didn’t join. I was far from a standout athlete and didn’t think I belonged. But I met with my freshman roommate before the semester started, and he told me: “Why wouldn’t you? You’ll have 30 brothers immediately.” He was right. (S/O Trevor H.)

Those teammates became lifelong friends – roommates, wedding parties, people I still talk to regularly. Being part of that team was one of the best decisions I ever made.

It also shaped my career.

Because we weren’t a varsity program, someone had to run the website, write recaps, update rosters, and post scores. I stepped in. I learned on the fly. I started a blog, created roster sheets, managed social media, and kept my phone on me to post live updates during games when that wasn’t common yet (sorry again, Derek Daehn). It’s where my passion for athletic communications began.

That’s what makes the Division III experience so powerful. It’s about opportunity. It’s about involvement. It’s about discovering paths you didn’t expect.

The classroom mattered too. Small class sizes. Real relationships. My favorite class was with legendary coach John Gagliardi – where we learned more about being good people (and a few magic tricks) than football. And nobody skipped. Ever.

I’ve always respected Division III student-athletes and administrators because I’ve seen the reality. Limited resources. Small staffs. Coaches wearing multiple hats. Often one communications professional covering all sports on campus and hundreds of student-athletes – and still telling meaningful stories.

That passion is what makes Division III special.

hashtagD3Week exists to celebrate the full student-athlete experience – academics, athletics, leadership, and community impact. And it’s worth remembering that, on average, student-athletes make up ~31% of the student body at Division III institutions that, in turn, sponsor an average of 19 sports, often supported by incredibly small staffs doing remarkable work.

I’ve loved connecting with DIII schools during my time at FanWord, and I hope to connect with many more. The passion, creativity, and commitment across Division III is unmatched.

The brands might not always be national names. The arenas might be smaller. But the pride, the friendships, and the impact? Just as big.

Happy hashtagD3Week to everyone who makes it special.

“Make A Friend”

April 10, 2026…My old college coach, Hawley Waterman used to say, at the end of games right before we shook hands with the other team, “fellas make a friend”.
What he meant by this is, after the game is over you’re no longer adversaries, but just lacrosse players playing a game you all love. Treat each other with respect because you never know later in life you might meet this person on the other side of the field in a job interview or somewhere where you need a favor. The lacrosse community is a small one so, we have to stick together and great things can come of it.
This is only one of the many great things that he taught our team. He was after all an old southern gentleman from the Eastern shore of Maryland who smoked a pipe and wore plaid golf pants on the sidelines. He was always calm and treated everyone with respect. He gave me, a football player with no lacrosse experience, a chance to be on the Kean university lacrosse team, which started me on my journey to fall in love with a sport.
I can’t thank you enough coach Waterman!

“Lacrosse or Hockey”

April 18, 2026…Daniel Paur
I found lacrosse completely by accident. I attended St.John’s in Collegeville and ran cross country and track my first two years. I had hockey buddies that were going to play on the jv side and I grew up playing hockey and John Harrington was the head coach there at the time. I thought it would be fun to play college hockey with my friends and play for a great coach.
Before the season started my friends decided not to play hockey. They played lacrosse in high school and were going to play at SJU.
After a tough decision to play or not play hockey, I decided to try lacrosse with my friends.
This was 1999-2001. Even though I really wanted to play hockey at St.John’s, it was a great decision to play lacrosse. I immediately fell in love with the sport, its roots, and meaning.
Because I played at St. John’s I have since co-founded the Cansayapi lacrosse program on the Lower Sioux, and coached at the youth, high school, collegiate, and international levels.
Such a lucky circumstance really worked out in my favor.
Lacrosse will always be in my blood!

“The Sacred Game can Change Lives”

April 19. 2026…Coach Frankey Jackson shared this poem/story from the Lightning Stick Lacrosse Club dated January 21, 2015

I share with you a poem by a very talented young lady from the Pine Ridge reservation….she is a multi sport high school athlete with awesome lacrosse skills…..
My hands were perfectly molded to my first lacrosse stick. I developed a bond with an inanimate object and an ancient game. I love this sport. I am in love with what it has lead me to be, the people I have met, but what I love most of all ‒ sharing it.
In the sanctuary of the grass field, I feel invincible. My body is able to move freely without any worldly burden. The tranquility is shared with everyone on the field, and the calmness shows no prejudice. I am spiritually connected with every individual soul that is within these boundaries.
Lacrosse has offered me a new lens to see an ancient, forgotten world that is only visible to those who open their hearts to new culture, and divine experiences. Through lacrosse, I have connected with Indigenous people from every corner of the Great Plains, and shared a transcendent experience with each and every one.
Lacrosse is seen as a “Medicine Game”, played to heal the spirit. But it also has the power to bring people together and gives them something to be connected with by their Deities. I have been adopted into a family spread all across the land of North America, and I feel at home as long as I know I can be healed by players who share the same love for the game.
Experiencing this powerful prayer, in the form of lacrosse, has influenced me to bring it to others. My eyes see sadness and destruction every day, and no solace in the games we have for youth today. I believe if I share this sanctuary of sacred entertainment, it can change lives- just as it has mine.

“Being in the right place”

April 14, 2026…My story started with a girl, a girl in Philly. Met her my senior year of HS at church camp. During my Freshman year we wrote each other monthly (before email and internet we had to put our letters in the mail!).
I spent 2 weeks of my summer between Fr and So year of college with her and her family. She was a HS All-American, her boyfriend was the defensive captain, and her dad is in the US Lacrosse HOF. I saw about 14 games during those 2 weeks. Her BF, mad that I was visiting had me suit up during Saturday morning captains practice. I never threw a ball, caught a ball or knew nothing of the game. I just got the crap beat out of me.
Fast forward to my JR year of college I move to St. Thomas, met now HS official Joe Petroske at a party and he invited me to practice “we only need athletes, and you look athletic”.
My first practice I went to Sport Mart and bought a wooden girls stick (didn’t know the difference and I thought they were cooler than the plastic sticks). No one laughed at me, AC Gardin and Andy Harbert took me under their wings. I couldn’t throw and catch, but Andy didn’t want to play midfield so he taught me how to Face Off. I might have been one of the first FOGO’s in Lacrosse history.
During those three years I made a ton of friends that are still part of my life today. The team entrusted me to be captain and president and we worked hard to get more competitive and taken seriously by the school.
I helped Mark Hellenack out for a youth clinic in Hopkins and he told me about a Asst. Coaching job at AHA. I was suppose to coach under a UMD kid. First practice, the HC never showed up and I became a defacto head coach without knowing enough about the sport, on the job learning.
Then, 2 years later Mark referred me to Blake as they were going full Varsity under the school and I applied. The AD said i was a risky hire as “we’d sink or swim with this one”. Thankfully I surrounded myself with some amazing asst coaches; Andy Slater, Matt Singleton and PJ Harvey. All who’d played D1.
Then while on a trip for men’s league Mark Hellenack did it again and nominated me for president of the MBSLA. During that time HS Boys lacrosse doubled, and we worked with Howard Rogers to get MSHSL sanctioned.
A result of that position and the success Blake was having sparked Coach Anderson from Notre Dame to reach out and ask to bring a few players they had their eyes on for Notre Dames lacrosse team camp/tourney. I partnered with Justin Hoban and we created the MN Elite team, which we ran for 2 summers and participated in numerous tournaments and winning all but 1.
So you could say my early days in lacrosse are all about a girl (who I never won over) and being in the right place and taking roles no one else wanted…
